- 25 g (0.9 oz) fresh parsley, finely chopped
- 30 g (1.1 oz) melted butter
- 3 g (0.1 oz) salt
- 10 g (0.4 oz) garlic, minced
- 150 g (5.3 oz) ham, thinly sliced
- 150 g (5.3 oz) cheese (mozzarella, cheddar, or your choice), grated
- 1 egg, whisked (for egg wash)
Construction
1. Prepare the Garlic Butter
- In a small bowl, mix the melted butter, minced garlic, salt, and chopped parsley. Set aside.
2. Roll Out the Puff Pastry
- On a lightly floured surface, roll out the puff pastry into a rectangular sheet (if not pre-rolled).
- Brush the garlic butter evenly over the surface of the pastry.
3. Add the Fillings
- Lay the sliced ham evenly over the pastry.
- Sprinkle the grated cheese on top of the ham, ensuring an even distribution.
4. Roll and Slice
- Starting from one long edge, carefully roll the pastry into a tight log.
- Use a sharp knife to slice the roll into even pieces, about 2–3 cm (1 inch) thick.
5. Prepare for Baking
- Place the rolls flat on a baking tray lined with parchment paper.
- Brush the tops and sides with the whisked egg for a golden finish.
6. Bake
- Preheat your oven to 200°C (400°F).
- Bake the rolls for 15–20 minutes, or until golden brown and puffed.
7. Serve
- Allow to cool slightly before serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
Variations
- Vegetarian Option
- Replace ham with sautéed spinach, mushrooms, or roasted vegetables.
- Spicy Twist
- Add chili flakes, jalapeños, or a spicy cheese like pepper jack.
- Herb and Garlic Explosion
- Use a mix of herbs such as basil, thyme, or oregano for added depth of flavor.
- Sweet and Savory
- Add a thin layer of honey or fig jam beneath the ham for a sweet-savory contrast.
- Different Proteins
- Substitute ham with turkey, smoked salmon, or cooked bacon bits.
- Cheese Variations
- Experiment with gouda, blue cheese, or a mix of cheeses for a unique flavor profile.
Tips for Success
- Chilled Pastry: Keep the puff pastry cold to ensure it bakes up light and flaky.
- Even Filling: Spread the ingredients evenly to avoid uneven rolls.
- Cutting the Rolls: Use a serrated knife for clean cuts without squishing the pastry.
- Prevent Sticking: Line your baking tray with parchment paper to avoid sticking.
- Make Ahead: Prepare the rolls and freeze them unbaked; bake directly from frozen, adding a few extra minutes to the cooking time.
These puff pastry rolls are perfect for parties, appetizers, or a quick snack—crispy, cheesy, and irresistible!
